Land of smoke
Events that appear distant are not that far away when viewed from another perspective. We can look at time folded in geological rocks and see that a distant epoch touches another as we in the present touch the surfaces.
The presence of Aboriginal Australia is everywhere noted within Cook’s manuscript through smoke, for as he travelled up the East coast signal fires were ever present, – so much so that as he left the coast, he called the new land ‘a continent of smoke’
